The 8 Crews That Carry Naples

There is a version of this story that is only about numbers, and we will get to those. But start here instead: somewhere in Logan Woods this morning, before the heat index hit 104, somebody was setting posts. Rain came through around 2:00pm, like it does from June to September, and they worked through it or waited it out and then worked anyway. That crew has done this roughly two hundred times a year, every year, since 2020.

We have the receipts, because in Collier County you cannot build a fence without a permit, and permits are public. Which means the entire fencing market leaves a paper trail: who worked, when, on what, for how much. We pulled all of it. 8,207 permits. Six and a half years. 696 contractors.

The cliff at 100 permits

Fence contracting in Collier County does not present itself as a smooth ramp from small shops to large ones. It hits a vertical cliff.

Of the 434 entities that pulled a fence permit between January 2024 and June 2026, 64 met our threshold of five or more permits. But look at the top of that list and the shape of the market changes completely. Ranks 1 through 8 all cleared 100 permits. Rank 9 comes in at 63. That is a 37% drop in a single step, and nothing else in the top forty looks like it.

That cliff is not a statistical quirk. It marks the line between running a two-truck crew and operating an enterprise that can survive Southwest Florida on an industrial schedule: limestone post-digs, wind-load engineering, county inspection queues, supply chains that went sideways in 2021 and never fully settled, and a payroll that has to clear whether or not it rained at two o'clock.

The eight crews that carry the county

These are the shops setting posts at dawn, walking inspectors through job sites, and building the perimeters of Collier County one hole at a time. Six of the eight also appear on the seven-year continuity list further down; those are marked.

The other test: who was still here in the morning

Volume measures how much a crew carries. It does not measure how long they carried it. So we ran a second test, and it is a much harder one to pass: pull at least one Collier County fence permit in every calendar year from 2020 through 2025, and again in the first half of 2026. No gaps. No missed years.

Of the 696 contractors in the dataset, 31 made it through 2025 unbroken. Twenty-three were still filing in 2026.

The churn behind that number is relentless. In 2025 alone, 117 contractors filed a first Collier County fence permit while 162 filed what is, so far, their last. Of the 87 companies that started in 2023, thirteen were still working two years later. That is a 15% three-year survival rate. A license, a truck, an auger, and a phone will get anyone into this business. None of them keep you in it.

Look at the range in the table below. Carter runs hundreds of jobs a year. JDI Construction Group has pulled twenty permits in seven years, roughly three a year, and never missed one. Different businesses entirely, and in a way the small number is the more remarkable achievement: at three jobs a year, every single one had to land right or there is no next year.

Six companies passed both tests

Put the two lists side by side and the overlap is small. Carter Fence Company, Russ Carter Fence, Climatrol Quality Aluminum Products, Southern Gate and Fence, Premier Fence, and TPI Aluminum Specialties are in the top eight by volume and among the twenty-three who never missed a year.

Six companies out of 696. Under one percent of everyone who has ever pulled a Collier County fence permit has managed to be both big and durable at the same time. That is the number worth sitting with. Scale is hard. Endurance is harder. Doing both, through a pandemic, a hurricane, a price spike, and the price war that followed it, is close to rare air.

The cliff is not a wall

It would be easy to read all this and conclude the market is closed. It is not, and one company at the bottom of the cliff makes the point.

The cliff is steep, but somebody is climbing it right now. This market punishes, but it is not rigged. It rewards what it has always rewarded: the crew that answers the phone, shows up when they said they would, and does the work well enough that the next call comes without advertising.

You are not buying pickets. You are buying whether they show up.

When you hire a fence contractor in Naples you are not just paying for vinyl panels or aluminum posts. You are paying for job-site reliability, a permit that actually clears, and a structure engineered to stand through a Florida storm season. Smaller crews absolutely have their place, and some of the most durable businesses in this entire dataset are small. But scale and continuity both tell you something real, and until now neither one was checkable.

Every fence contractor in this county will tell you they have been doing this for years. Most of them believe it. Some are describing a career that includes a different company, in a different county, before this one. Permit history does not care what the truck says. It is public, it is dated, and it is the closest thing to an honest answer you will get when you are staring at three bids wondering who will still be around when you call about a gate latch in 2029.

A note on method, and on fairness

• The data: every issued fence permit in Collier County public records from January 1, 2020 through June 30, 2026, with duplicate permit numbers removed. 8,207 unique permits, 696 contractors.
• Two different windows: the Centurion Club rankings cover January 2024 through June 2026, matching our main directory. The continuity analysis covers the full 2020 through mid-2026 record.
• Grouping: we group permits by contractor name, not license number, because companies renew and re-file under new license numbers while continuing the same operation. Carter Fence Company does exactly this in 2026.
• What absence means: nothing bad. A contractor can be excellent and not appear here. Companies formed after 2020, crews working mostly in Lee County, and firms filing under a parent company's license will not show a continuous Collier record.
• What these rankings are not: a measure of workmanship, price, warranty, or how anyone treats their customers. Permit data measures activity. It cannot measure whether the gate still swings true in year three.
